Most of the regular readers of this blog know that I try to keep it current and add something new everyday- good, bad , or hopelessly mediocre.
But when March rolls around, the daily blogging starts to take a back seat to the Madness....its college basketball tournament time....and I am a fan. Last night I actually skipped the Oscars to watch Rutgers beat Georgetown in the Big East Women's Tournament 63-56 in double overtime. In a remarkable comeback, after being down 15-4 until 6:28 of the first half and trailing 23-19 at halftime, Rutgers was able to take a lead briefly in the second half, then lose it, and tie at 46-46 with Chelsey Lee's two free throws with 13 seconds to go.
Nikki Speed made an amazing three pointer to tie it with two seconds left in the first OT. and Rutgers was able to knock off the #11 Hoyas in the second overtime to advance to the semifinals tonight against West Virginia. What made the win most incredible and improbable was that RU won with its leading scorer, Brittany Ray largely ineffective (three points) and in foul trouble most of the game (playing only 25 minutes), fouling out at 3:18 of the second half.
There was no shortage of heroics....kudos go to Lee (17pts 13rbs), Speed (9pts, two three pointers) , Khadijah Rushdan (14pts), Monique Oliver (9 points off the bench), and Myia McCurdy (7 points and 8 rbs).
The bottom line...the game started out very, very ugly, and ended up being a classic of clutch playing at crunch time.
Tonight at 6PM EST, the amazing UCONN Huskies, led by Maya Moore and Tina Charles, try to break their own record of 70 wins in a row by going against Notre Dame for #71 in Hartford. This will be the third meeting of the two teams this year, with UCONN winning easily both times. WVU and Rutgers will follow the completion of UCONN-ND.
And tomorrow, the Big East men's tournament begins in Madison Square Garden with four opening round games. While the women's tournament has UCONN as the solid favorite, the men's tourney is another story...Syracuse is a prohibitive favorite but anything can- and usually does- happen in the men's bracket.
This is just the beginning....the NCAA's will have their selection for the men's tournament on Sunday, and the women a week from today. So if you're expecting some political commentary here over the next few weeks, I'll give it to you....just not as much, and maybe just a tad on the late side.
