So this should work as a temporary solution to my problem.
1-Copy my user file off of my powerbook to a FW drive
2-Send my PB in for repair
3-Add a new user on my friends mac
4-go into NetInfo Manager and redirect my location to my FW Drive
5-When PB gets back, copy user folder back to PB.
Will that work?
Sounds good. I have no experience with Firewire drives, but as long as the OS mounts it before you log in it should be ok. My home dir is on the second SATA drive in my g5.

Hmm... To you think those pencils would fit inside a 4th gen Nano?? :p
I was thinking more along the lines of using the front and back and glue it onto something bigger.

If I lived in the UK I'd subscribe to GoMINI but it is soooo expensive to get over here! It works out to be about $10USD per issue.
I wish imported magazines whould cost only $10USD here. :o
Anyway, I don't subscribe to anything, but there's two comics I usually buy every month; Pondus and Nemi.
I used to buy a lot more magazines earlier, and had a subscription to the norwegian edition of PC World, plus there were other magazines I also bought very often, but after I got internet access I barely buy anything anymore.
Exception whould be if I'm some place without good internet access.. last time I was in a hospital I bought magazines for about 1000NOK (~157$USD)

No one really knows for sure, but the timeframe for an update is relatively narrow. If you go by the 6-month update rule, the iBook would get its update in November.
The latest we're likely to see an update (and rumours have suggested it to be more likely) is at MacWorld San Francisco, in early January. If this is what happens, it's very likely that the next iBook model will be a substantial redesign, and not just a speed-bump. Among some of the more interesting rumours have been that there would be a 13" screen in the current 12" case size, that the lineup will move to G4s like the iMac did, and (the most fanciful of them all) we'll see the current 14" iBook replaced with a 14" widescreen model.
No matter what happens, hold on to your money if you want to get the most out of a new iBook; the iBook 700 we have now is great, but it could be the end of its generation.

I have a question about inserting photos in your posts when using and iPad (pr iPhone for that mater). I just started using the DropBox app to upload photos to and then using a link to the file. But I was curious if I could do this using any of the services from MobileMe, which I'm paying for. There is the Gallery and iDisk available.
The problems I'm having are that the iDisk doesn't seem to let you upload photos to it, but it does create links to the file. And the Gallery let's you upload to it, but the files links it creates are to the phot's album on the MobileMe site, so the photos doesn't appear when I insert it in a post.
Am I missing something, or is Apple's premium service not as useful as I thought?

How many pages in the file? Is it not small enough to just copy and paste text into a Word file and then clean up?
It's only 2 pages, and I control the Word document and the PDF, but not the PDF->text step.
The document is my CV, and I've noticed that sometimes when I upload it to a site, they are unable to extract info from it. Today, I got feedback from two recipients that they were unable to read my submission as it was symbols and gobbledygook. That's not good.
I would still prefer to keep the file as a PDF, precisely because I can't trust Word with formatting, but if the PDF will get mangled it's pointless.
I may have found a way using ghostscript (http://j-b.livejournal.com/339214.html), but it's not installed by default and I don't have enough space on this Mac to get it from source or MacPorts.
EDIT: Just saw your edit. Using Word 2008's "native" Save AS PDF gives me the exact same file as the Print, and Save as PDF from Preview also doesn't help. The PDF-X file is larger, but still uses FlateDecode. Still on 10.6.6 due to the lack of disk space issue.

No, no Applecare, just 27" 3.4GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7, 2TB Serial ATA Drive, everything else is default. Speaking of iPods, what kind are we going to get?
If I remember correctly (bought 3 years ago with the deal) you can buy any of the iPods but you get a rebate amount based on the 8GB iTouch (less of a rebate if you go with the classic, in which case you get a rebate for that retail price)
Can anyone actually confirm this? I do believe we still actually pay taxes on the iPod which the rebate does not refund also.
that's the way it was with me when i bought a mbp some years back. i paid for the computer and the ipod but got a rebate (i still paid taxes) for $200 a couple weeks later.

Regarding what Dav posted, would I need to be jailbroken on 3.2.2?
just got my iPad 1 in today and the firmware is old school.
I know 4.3 has a tethered jailbreak on it right now AND it has some battery issues and what not
Would I be able to somehow update to 4.2.2 INSTEAD of 4.3? That way I'd hold on to good battery life and untethered jailbreak. Once more, I am NOT jailbroken right now so I am wondering if I need to do that first.

I installed Windows Vista on my Mac Mini and for some reason there is no sound when in I'm Windows. I get sound on the Mac partition but no sound on Windows. I checked Device Manager on the Windows partition and there were no errors for the sound drivers. Any ideas on this one?

Ahh bus-powered is the term I was looking for. Thank you for all the informative replies, much appreciated.
Just some final questions.. is there any advantage to using a outlet-powered HD over a portable bus-powered HD? And how much difference will I notice between a 5400RPM and a 7200RPM drive? The difference in size would be 250GB, since OWC only sells up to 750GB at 7200RPM, is it really worth the speed?
Heck, is there a reason to use a portable? Now that I'm thinking about it, it's convenient, but maybe unnecessary. What are you guys using? Bus-powered or outlet?
I don't know technically if there is an advantage of powered HDD's over bus powered HDD's, but I feel better with a powered drive knowing that I am not over-taxing my USB ports with added load.
You will notice a measurable but not extravagant difference in performance in a 7200RPM HDD over the 5400RPM HDD.
Only you can decide if the trade off in speed over capacity is worth it.
I have a few powered HDD's that I use for Time Machine backups, and I do not carry them around. They stay in one place 99% of the time. Therefore I have no need for a more portable storage device other than my laptop itself. Again, this is a decision only you can make because it comes down to personal preference. There are many options available to you no matter which way you decide.

It looks pretty hot, for a NFS game.
I'm probably the only one who would have preferred a new Burnout from Criterion though...
reminds me of the good ol nfs hot pursuit 1 and 2 games. looks awesome! :D

Oh, I'm so sorry to bother you with my silly little Wii problems. I suppose I should be just fine with controllers that don't always control. While I'm at it, I should be just like you and accept that my mouse doesn't always click, my keyboard doesn't always type, and my TV remote doesn't always change channels.
Huh thats what I usually do:confused: anyway im just trying to say it is a common problem and its not like they are going to replace your numchuck.
