The weird and wonderful world of bioluminescence

"In the deep, dark ocean, many sea creatures make their own light for hunting, mating and self-defense. Bioluminescence expert Edith Widder was one of the first to film this glimmering world. At TED2011, she brings some of her glowing friends onstage, and shows more astonishing footage of glowing undersea life."

Terrific TED talk about Antarctic Ice and the fearsome leopard seal (narwhals, too)

This presentation by Paul Nicklen is possibly the best TED talk I've watched - - funny, fascinating, well-delivered, and supported by tremendous photographs. Among the interesting factoids: The ice he regularly dove in was so cold that he typically vomited each time he hit the water. National Geographic's informal motto is "we publish photographs, not excuses." And unless I heard wrong, one of the whales pictured in the video is believed to be 250 years old.

But most of all, the leopard seal stars as a fearsome (as in, sometimes they eat people), but sometimes charming creature.

What is Envoy?

As the (rather disturbing) video explains, Envoy is supposedly a new service that takes over the Facebook profile of a dead loved one - - the program analyzes the Facebook user's history and then provides a steady stream of updates and chats so you can pretend your loved one is still around. "Using the Facebook API, we can take the dead's profile, and project it into environments outside of Facebook."

Presumably it's an advertisement for a new movie? Via.

Fun action video

The latest action short by Freddie Wong features a long take, some goofy moments, and Eliza Dushku. The making of video is below:

Rick the Adventure Sphere dialog and t-shirt design (Portal)

Late in Portal 2, you gain the assistance of a robot known as Rick the Adventure Sphere ("designed for danger"). It's a pretty heated moment, so the natural inclination is to swiftly complete the task at hand, but if you take your time, Rick says one great line after another, including singing an adventure song and suggesting catch phrases once you beat the boss. You can enjoy his dialog in the video above. And there's a brand new t-shirt design by up for vote at Threadless:

Finally, speaking of Portal, here's Erik Wolpaw's recent NYU lecture:
