During his tenure as Mayor of Wasilla in 2002, Palin ran for the nomination of the party Republican Lieutenant Governor. While she was second in the race, made the eventual winner of the GOP Governor, then Senator Frank Murkowski the ill-fated move of the appointment of his daughter Lisa Murkowski as a substitute for the Senate for himself while he was promoted to the Office of the Governor. This led to a reaction of even the legislative power of the State dominated by Republicans, many of which the appointment as a naked Act of nepotism.
