Terrorists Attack At PNS Mehran Base In Karachi: Up Dates


Militants attacked a Pakistani naval aviation base, PNS Mehran, on Sunday night, killing at least four people and wounding five others, officials sources as saying.

At least two terrorists were arrested while they were trying to flee after launching attack and had gunfight with armed forces.

Senior police official Tahir Naveed said attackers remained inside the Mehran base and kept fighting with base personnel for over two hours.

An intelligence official said four people had been killed and five wounded.

The situation has been brought under control as rangers and army troops started pulling back to barracks. Ambulances have been allowed to enter into Mehran base.

Witnesses confirmed they heard sounds of gunshots and saw smoke rising from the base for no less than 2 hours.

Officials said between 15 and 20 attackers broke into the base, and had attacked three hangars housing aircraft.

Eyewitnesses informed officials sources that two blasts were heard at about 10:35pm.

Four killed persons were foreigners, media reports claimed.

Some injured including the security head of Mehran Base have been admitted to PNS Shifa, a naval hospital, for medical attainment, officials sources said.

Terrorists remained present in PNS Mehran where exchange of firing between terrorists and law enforcement agencies continued for more than two hours.

Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani telephoned chiefs of armed forces, discussing the critical situation which had taken place at one of the sensitive places in the city.

Police, rangers and other law enforcement agencies’ commandos rushed and cordoned off the area shortly after the attack.

Rescue teams including Edhi and Chhipa welfare ambulances have converged to crime scene.

Officials requested people to take alternative routes as rush on the roads are hindering rescue activities.

Later, more than 100 fresh army commandos managed to make way into base where gunfight was underway, officials sources.
Interior Minister Rehman Malik directed law enforcement agencies to reach where terrorists were present.

Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani telephoned Rehman Malik, directing him to take appropriate measures immediately.

Sindh government declared emergency in all hospitals.
