Indy 500

It’s the Greatest Spectacle in Motorsports and in less than two weeks, it celebrates it’s 100th birthday. The Indianapolis 500 is one of the largest and most famous sporting events in the world and PEAK Motor Oil is honored to be part of the event’s rich heritage.
The PEAK Performance Pole Award presented by AutoZone will be presented Saturday upon the completion of Pole Day at Indianapolis Motor Speedway to the driver who will eventually lead the field of 33 racers to the green flag Sunday, May 29. Hall-of-fame caliber racers such as Rex Mays, Mario Andretti, AJ Foyt, Johnny Rutherford, Rick Mears, Tony Stewart and, most recently, Helio Castroveves, have started the Indy 500 at P1 and PEAK is proud to be part of that legacy.

"We are extremely excited to present the PEAK Performance Pole Award and PEAK Performance Front Row at the 100th anniversary of the Indianapolis 500" said Jerry Riccioni, Senior Vice President of Automotive Sales for Old World Industries, maker of PEAK products. "This will also be our fourth consecutive year as the official motor oil of the Indianapolis 500. It's a great honor that we can celebrate this milestone at such a significant event for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Indy Car Series."

Saturday is a special day for fans of the Indianapolis 500 for another reason. Tom Carnegie, the track’s longtime announcer who died in February at age 91, will be honored for the 61 Pole Days where his voice created a sense of drama and excitement. During “Tom Carnegie Day,” the new Public Address stand at IMS will be named in Carnegie’s honor and his unmistakable, booming voice will be heard at various times over the Public Address system. In addition, highlights of Carnegie’s remarkable career will appear on the Speedway video boards.

Carnegie’s incredible baritone coined and developed such iconic phrases as, “AND HEEEEEEE’S ON IT!” “HEEEEEERE’S THE TIME AND SPEED REPORT!” and the classic “AAAAAAND, IT’S A NEEEEEW TRACK RECORD!”

PEAK, also the official motor oil of the IZOD IndyCar Series, will provide frequent updates of both the Pole Day festivities and the Indianapolis 500 itself through its social media outlets, Facebook.com/PEAKAuto and Twitter.com/PEAKAuto.

Gates open at 6 a.m. Saturday with practice beginning at 8. A past pole winners’ Q & A is scheduled for 10 a.m. in the plaza with an autograph session immediately following. Qualifying for the PEAK Performance Pole Award for the 100th Indianapolis 500 is expected to begin around 11 a.m. For more information on the event and for tickets, visit IndianapolisMotorSpeedway.com.

Television coverage of Pole Day kicks off at 10 a.m. EDT on Versus.
