Sam Clafin and Astrid Berges-Frisbeysat down with JustJared.com to talk about their new movie Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, in theaters now!
The 24-year-old actor talked about how he prepared for his shirtless scene in the film.
“I just didn’t eat for like three weeks (laughs) prior to that. I’ll never forget because on the last day of filming after they yelled cut I literally wolfed down three donuts,” Sam said. Ha!
Astrid, 24, plays a mermaid in the film and said that the special effects in the film make it look perfect.
“Working with Rob Marshall is interesting in the sense that he is very meticulous, and he wants everything to look so real. I think that is something that is so important because the special effects in the film are what make it. I had dots all over my face and on my legs, pretty much all over (laughs) in order to create the animation,” she said.
FYI: Sam is wearing Burberry and Astrid is wearing Chanel.

Sam Claflin - JustJared.com Exclusive Interview
JJ: How exciting is it to be a part of Pirates?
SC: It’s a bit of a dream come true to be honest. From England to LA. The whole journey from the very beginning, from audition one to right this second has been a joy ride, I can’t quite believe that I’m here. Inevitably i keep on getting surprised day in and day out and its pleasant, very pleasant.
JJ: Are you excited for the film to come out?
SC: It’s very very nerve-racking and I’m very anxious, but at the same time very eager to hear what peoples views are on this fourth epic tale.
JJ: You have the only shirtless scene in the film…
SC: Unfortunately (laughs). That was my first day shooting as well and I am not the most confident of people so the insecurities definitely came out with guns blazing. In the original script I read, there was
no mention of taking tops off (laughs).
JJ: Lets talk Snow White!
SC: I’m so excited, from the very beginning of the meetings where I met with the director (Rupert Sanders), he is a genius. I was shown the artwork and some of the costume ideas and the vision. I later saw a three minute trailer that he had put together. He truly is an absolute genius. I have a feeling it is going to be a very special experience.
JJ: Are you excited to work alongside Kristen Stewart?
SC: Oh yeah, I’m a big fan of hers. Not that long ago I watched The Runaways, she’s truly an amazing actress. Even seeing her in Into the Wild, I’m a big fan and the opportunity to work with her will be amazing.

JJ: How has life changed since Pirates?
ABF: I learned so much while I was able to do this fantastic project. I’m more on an airplane now than ever, flying from place to place.
JJ: How was working on your first American film?
ABF: The Pirates films are very particular films. They are produced with such a budget, so my experience in America has been something very particular, not all films are this big or involve as many people as this film did. A Pirates of the Caribbean set is phenomenal.
JJ: What was it like landing this role?
ABF: What I love about this franchise is that anyone can audition for a role. They select English people for American roles, Australians for English, it’s a very open field. Everyone can audition for a role. I worked with the best vocal coaches and it was really interesting. I learned a little English on the set, and luckily my accent isn’t so strong because I can pick up languages. Of course, I don’t feel as comfortable with English as I would like to.
